Welcome to the RealFat Life!

Hello and welcome! This is the introduction to the RealFat Blog at!

If this is the first time that you've visited this post will help you get a sense of what to expect and the rest of the website.

RealFat Life is a project that our family (Chance and Sallie Godwin and their two kids [so far], Alice and Edward) launched in October of 2017. It’s purpose is to document our continued exploration of ancestral diet and lifestyle as we synthesize ancient and contemporary wisdom to live the richest life we can in the modern world.

We want to reclaim the hard work done by our ancestors

to discover a wise way of life - and apply their knowledge to our contemporary setting.

What is ancestral life and why are we so interested in studying it? We try not to view the past with rose-tinted glasses, but we do recognize that there are many smart ideas that accumulated over the course of millennia which have been forgotten or disregarded in the last 200 years due to commercial propaganda and progressive modern philosophies. We want to reclaim the hard work done by our ancestors to discover a wise way of life - and apply their knowledge to our contemporary setting.

As of 2017 we have been married for 4 years and we have already incorporated many traditional practices into our daily routine, reaping the benefits along the way, and it’s our goal continue stitching together the often fragmented and disconnected elements of modern life into more integrated whole.

We call this the “RealFat life” because it's about pursuing the richest and best things and not settling for less. We don't want to buy into the junk ideas and junk lifestyles pushed on us just to line the pockets of large unscrupulous corporations who have compromised their integrity to get our money. From a nutritional standpoint, “real fat” is the single most concentrated source of nourishment and delicious flavor, and our ancestors built their eating habits and lifestyle around this source of sustenance. As such it is our symbol for all the best things in life both physical and spiritual - and our unfolding quest to enjoy them more fully.

Our blog can be divided up into a few sections. We’ll be addressing the needs of Guys, Gals and Kids in relation to our contemporary approach to ancestral life. We’ll talk about nutritional science, food preparation techniques, recipes, daily routines, creativity, craftsmanship, history, philosophy, religion, business, agriculture, parenting and finally - but most importantly - we’ll explore the thematic narratives we use to interpret the meaning of our life.

We'll be publishing blog posts, videos, podcasts, and social media posts chronicling our journey as we double down on the things we've already learned and dig in deeper to the rich history of knowledge that's always a few clicks or page turns away.

We’re not here to promote our approach to life as “the only” way, but we do believe that there are principles of life which apply equally to all people, and all people must to take responsibility for their decision to embrace or reject these principles.

We’re simply sharing what we do and why we do it and we hope that you find it entertaining, educational and delicious.

So glad to have you along for our journey!

~Chance and Sallie
