This is how we coffeeee - with our realfat coffee recipe!

Updated: Sep 24, 2019

This is how we coffee! Yes, I just used coffee as a verb. ;) Coffee is famous for its energy-giving power, helping people to get stuff done. Seems like an action verb to me!

There are lots of different opinions on coffee - especially in the health community! Coffee is a touchy subject. Some people love it. Some people hate it. And everyone has got an opinion on how one should drink it. My opinion is that you gotta do what's right for you!

Did you know that there is actually a specific gene that determines how you process caffeine?

There are diets that ban it, others use it as the foundation of their entire program. What they often forget to account for is that each person has slightly different physiological needs due our diverse genetic backgrounds. Coffee is a beverage that people have consumed all over the world and coffee CAN have a lot of health benefits including high levels of antioxidants and potent ant-aging properties, but the benefits and drawbacks can vary a lot depending on your particular genetic makeup. The caffeine genes for some people are set on "slow burn" and for others they're set on "fast burn." The speed that a person "burns" caffeine determines how much of it they can tolerate. I am a fast-burner, meaning it hits me really hard and fast - so I have to moderate my intake or I can get jittery. I generally drink 16 oz of quarter-caff or half-caff. My husband is a "slow-burner," meaning that the caffeine slowly releases into his system and he has a much higher tolerance for caffeine in general. He can drink a cup of coffee before bed and still sleep like a baby! He generally drinks 16 oz of full caff every morning and sometimes adds another cup later in the afternoon.

A great general rule of thumb is go with how YOU FEEL!! If you feel great drinking 5 cups of coffee a day, then go for it!! If you feel great drinking 1 cup of decaf a day - then do it!! If you feel better not having any coffee at all - then don't!! You can read the science and the studies all day long, but at the end of the day your body can tell you what it needs the best. Listen to your body.

We love our coffee blended with lots of real fat! Because FAT. We love all the fat. DUH...lol.

This coffee is so satisfying that it basically is our breakfast.

Blending fat like butter and coconut oil into your coffee is now commonly called "bulletproof" coffee thanks to Dave Asprey - the Canadian who popularized this idea.

This coffee is so satisfying that it basically is our breakfast. Lot's of times we don't even eat our smoothies until after noon! It is full of super-nutritious, satisfying fats that give us tons of energy, focus, and stable blood-sugar while we tackle the craziness of a busy morning. We also add bone broth protein or grass-fed collagen for a protein boost!

Coconut oil contains MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) which boosts your metabolism and gives you instant energy. (So basically MCT oil just is concentrated coconut oil, and brain octane is like concentrated MCT). Grass-fed butter and ghee contains healthy saturated fats which feeds your brain, provides high doses of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) which is amazing for fat loss, and is wonderfully high in the fat soluble vitamins A, D, and K2!! :D

So, here is about how we make our coffee and this is what we use:

These are the basic proportions. Depending on how much coffee we are making, we increase or decrease these amounts:

  • 2 cups almost-boiling filtered water

  • 1/4 c. freshly ground coffee (Sallie does 2 Tbs. Decaf and 2 Tbs caff; Chance does all caff)

  • 2 Tbs. Grass-fed Kerrygold butter, this ghee or this Ghee

  • 1 Tbs. Brain octane, MCT oil, or coconut oil (we use brain octane at the moment)

  • 1 Tbs. Chocolate BB protein or grass-fed collagen (chocolate BBP is Sallie's favvvv!!)

Brew the coffee as you would using the french press method, then pour into your mug or thermos. Add the butter, brain octaine/mtc/coconut oil, and the collagen/bbp to your coffee. Then the real magic happens when you take a milk frother and whip the fat into the steaming hot coffee!! It is just like creamer - but better!!!

We made "bulletproof" coffee for years using straight up coconut oil. But recently I thought I'd give the brain octane a try (basically super concentrated coconut oil) - which is the official way to make the "bulletproof" coffee. I was skeptical at first, but then seriously astounded by the results. (I am not getting paid to say any of this by the way. Ha, I'm not that popular yet). But for real. We both noticed a huge difference in our mental clarity after switching to brain octane!! With the amount of "parent brain" we have (2.5 year old and an almost 6 month old) we need all the help we can get!

Hope you enjoy more energy, more mental clarity, and more stable blood sugar through your realfat day!! I know I do!!
